Hear From Our Customers

One Piece 15

“An ESV Credo that is one of my most prized Bibles. Exceptional quality, perfect communication and diligent execution.”

Jim Cantrell

One Piece 14

“I’ve now had two Bibles rebound by Jason at Sword and Shield. One is a Bible my father gave me when I was young and the other is a pulpit Bible. In fact, each of our elders had one of these LSB’s rebound by S&S. Having owned several Bibles from other rebinders, I can assure you that Jason’s work is second to none. He is the first person I will reach out to when I am ready for my next rebind!”

Todd Bryant

One Piece 13

“I received my first rebind from Jason last week and couldn’t be happier with the process or the results. Jason truly makes the process stress free and easy. He even helped with some of the decisions based on his experience with the actual leathers and colors. I appreciated his eye for what goes well with the other colors in the Bible. Can’t wait for my budget to allow my next rebind, already have some ideas!”

Brian Brandfas

“My dad purchased this Bible for me in 2010 when I got saved. I use it everyday for my personal devotion time, writing KidMin lessons, and during class when teaching our future generation. I was walked step by step through the entire process, with pictures along the way. I loved all the insight, but more importantly, I loved that Sword and Shield Bible Rebinding wanted to make sure that I made every decision, so it was a one-of-a-kind Bible for me.”

Daniel Witt

“Jason has done a couple of rebinds for me.

I have never been not impressed! He does excellent work.

Also, he works with you to make sure that you get exactly what you are looking for.

He is the best rebinder in my book!”

Landon Lambert

“Bible arrived last week and I am so impressed by the work done. Getting ready to break it in.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the process for getting a rebound Bible from Sword and Shield?
My schedule varies but it is typically 6-8 weeks from the time I receive your Bible. I’ll let you know when I get started, send pictures when it’s complete, and collect payment via Paypal or Venmo before return shipping.
It varies by the size of the Bible, style of rebind and add-ons you request. A good rough estimate is about $240-270 for a standard sized Bible. See our request a quote page for more specific pricing.
I accept either PayPal or Venmo when the work is completed.
Yes! I love offering new Bibles for sale in the style and colors of my own choosing. This is where I get to flex my creativity muscles! Most often Bibles for sale are found on my Facebook page or shared with any of the numerous “buy/sell/trade” Bible pages there. Additionally, since Bibles for sale are “my choice” style rebinds, I usually offer them at a slight discount.
You need to send it right away. Since I’ve opted to use a system which doesn’t require an advance deposit – the Bible itself acts as your deposit. Bible projects are placed on the schedule according to when they arrive.
Short answer: Yes. Longer answer: I don’t recommend it. Longest answer: glued bindings are also called “perfect bound” Bibles – an unfortunately inaccurate name. They’re far from perfect. Glued bindings are simply a stack of paper with glue added to one side in order to stick them together. The glue is designed to flex, but in time it’s likely to split. Pages will come lose. The spine will degrade. Rebinding such a Bible will make it look great, but not add much (if anything) to the lifespan of the Bible. That being said, only you know the Bible’s value to you. I simply want you to make an informed decision.
Yes. New Bibles offer the most opportunity to do custom work – for example, adding art gilt (color) to page edges. This is the work I prefer to do and it probably makes up about 2/3rds of the Bibles I rebind. But there’s no satisfaction quite like restoring a treasured and well-used copy of God’s Word.
No. I might turn away a project for a variety of reasons – most often knowing that I’m not the right craftsman to achieve your vision for your Bible. I often also talk potential customers out of rebinding a parent’s or grandparent’s Bible by asking two questions: “Do you intend to use it? If you’re not going to read it, wouldn’t you rather keep it the way it was handed to you?” In short, I don’t want either of us to regret the project when it’s complete.
For goatskin covers I prefer to work with Rivergrain Goatskin. For cowhide covers, there’s a number of products from Badalassi Carlo – Waxy, Minerva Box, Ecbatana Lux and Pueblo are primary. I use smooth goatskin, nappa lambskin or calfskin for liners. I try to match the customer’s desire for appearance and flexibility. This will be part of our project discussion!
Shipping in the Continental US via USPS Media Mail is included. Shipping outside the US is at the customer’s expense. Let’s discuss it before we get started.
Yes. Every one. Edge-lining is the process in which an inside liner leather is cut open in the center in order to let the text block be attached inside. Edge lining is more durable than paste-down Bibles.
Yapp is the term to describe the excess leather added around the text block that folds over to cover the edges and offer protection. A standard yapp has very little excess leather – this is how most factory Bibles are done. A full yapp has excess leather that folds over from each side and meets in the middle of the text block, fully covering the page edges. A generous yapp is somewhere in between. It fold over significantly but without touching.
Yes. However, you need to know that hardcover spines are usually a little tighter than softcover and likely won’t lay flat. Additionally, hardcover Bibles usually have squared corners which look odd with a leather cover. Hardcover Bibles will need to have the corner rounded – a process we offer. In the rare event the hardcover Bible has gold or silver gilting, rounding the corners isn’t possible.
Nope. This is one of those “stay in my lane” items. However, I can point you to other craftsmen like Bezalel Book Art who can do that work and send the speckled text block to me for a cover.
All Sword and Shield Bibles are machine stitched.
Paper. Simple, beautiful paper. On the vast majority of my rebinds jobs I’ll use a process that slips a black piece of paper under the edge-lined area of the binding and a second, decorative paper on top of that area. Most often our end sheets are colorful or antique maps. I’ll always try to match the end sheets to the theme of the Bible’s cover, liner, ribbons and page edges.
At Sword and Shield Bible Rebinding, we specialize in crafting custom leather covers and restoring Bibles with the utmost care and precision. Whether you’re preserving a treasured Bible or giving a new one lasting durability, each project is approached with respect for the Scriptures.
